HISP 2990B
Proseminar in Hispanic Studies
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This proseminar’s aims are twofold: 1) to provide graduate students with a map of the discipline of Hispanic Studies, with attention to its history and to its newest directions; and 2) to demystify key elements of an academic career, both specific to the doctoral program in our department and more generally. The bulk of course’s meetings will therefore have a dual structure. In the first half of our sessions, we will center on particular fields and their representative and innovative essays, in discussions introduced by members of the department and beyond. The second half of each class session will be devoted to practical issues around professionalization (article publication, reviews, conference participation, crafting the dissertation, etc.). Students will be closely involved in the planning of the course, contributing suggestions for topics to explore and potentially presenting samples of their own work.
