Prepare to embark on a hair-raising journey through Latin American macabre, supernatural, and horror fiction, spanning short stories and novels from the 19th to the 21st centuries. From ancestral Indigenous legends to contemporary narratives, and from graveyards and haunted dwellings to grim urban landscapes, the course examines how obscure fiction intersects with histories of inequality, human rights abuse, and patriarchal, racist, and capitalist violence. Through close readings of key authors and texts, students will gain a deeper understanding of the literary traditions that have shaped representations of fear, the supernatural, and the uncanny in Latin American literature.
