Hablan los hijos: una nueva generación de escritores latinoamericanos

This seminar introduces students to some of the most exciting voices in contemporary Latin American literature: Samanta Schweblin and Mariana Enríquez (Argentina), Alejandro Zambra and Nona Fernández (Chile), José Carlos Agüero and Gabriela Wiener (Peru), Valeria Luiselli and Verónica Gerber (Mexico). We will read their novels and short stories in relation to previous generations of Latin American writers and in conversation across borders with one another. We will look at their reception in their countries of origin and abroad via translation, and explore new ways of writing and talking about literature in blogs, podcasts, and reviews; we will also delve into contemporary experiments in film and the visual arts to see how they dovetail with and comment on common concerns around memory, identity, community, and crisis.
