Intensive Survey of Spanish Literature
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
HISP740, Intensive Survey of Spanish Literature, provides students with an overview of Spain’s major authors and literary movements from the Middle Ages to the present day. This course offers a varied introduction to Spanish literature in its historical and cultural contexts through the reading and analysis of poetry, essay, theater, and narrative fiction. There are two principal objectives for this class: a) to expose students to Spain’s cultural production and familiarize them with both canonical as well as non-canonical texts; b) to teach students to critically engage with and analyze literature in its historical and culture context. Reading chronologically, students will be able to appreciate the development of the Spanish literary tradition as they ask critical questions about identity, race, the nation, and cultural formation. Conducted in Spanish.
