Spanish for Medical Interviews

Catalog description
This course is designed to equip students with essential Spanish language skills to conduct effective medical interviews with Spanish-speaking patients. The course focuses on building the language skills, and cultural competencies needed to establish rapport, gather comprehensive medical histories, conduct physical exams, discuss symptoms, explain diagnoses, and address patient concerns. Students will learn through role-play scenarios, case studies, and interactive exercises that simulate real-life medical interviews. Emphasis will be placed on active listening, empathy, and cultural sensitivity to ensure clear communication and patient trust. By the end of the course, participants will be able to conduct patient-centered medical interviews in Spanish, improving care for Spanish-speaking communities. Pre-requisites: HISP 0400 , Score of 491+ on the Hispanic Studies Placement Exam (the exam is available online; you can find the link on the Hispanic Studies website under “Language Placement Exams”), or equivalent.
