Patterns of Exchange: Ornament in Art and Architecture Between Local and Global

This seminar will explore design history through the study of selected decorative motifs and design tropes (i.e., the lotus and dragon designs, floral and geometric motifs, and the concept of symmetry and repetition), examining their evolution through cultural and artistic exchange. Focusing on ornamental features found in movable art objects, such as textiles, ceramics, and metalwork, as well as architecture, students will trace the journey of these motifs across diverse cultures and time periods, observing how they adapt and transform in response to changing contexts. Through structured discussions, assigned readings, and curated museum visits, participants will critically analyze artworks that serve as prime examples of the exchange of decorative elements. This interdisciplinary course is tailored to appeal to a diverse audience, including students of design history, art history, art practitioners, individuals intrigued by the dynamics of artistic exchanges.
