GRMN 1660C
German Culture in the Nazi Era
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Explores the variety and the contexts of German cultural production during the Nazi era. We will examine party sanctioned mass-mediated culture in the Third Reich including literature, film, theater, and public spectacle; as well as "unofficial" cultural productions including exile literature, literature of "inner emigration," "degenerate" art, and concentration camp poetry. We'll inquire into the effects of the political ministration of culture in the Nazi era, asking to what degree continuities in cultural production were sustained after 1933, and investigating the hallmarks and the legacies of a distinctive "Nazi culture." Previous course work in German history and/or the Holocaust recommended but not required. In English.
