This course focuses on a crucial contemporary French social issue by examining the question of unemployment and the rise of so-called precarious jobs through their representations in literature, culture, and film. Special attention will be given to questions of identity, gender, race, socioeconomic factors, and politics. Authors read include Bon, Deck, Foenkinos, and Oster. In addition we will analyze several films and read the work of journalists and sociologists. Prerequisite: a course at the 600- or 700-level or equivalent proficiency.
