« Le vrai sexe » : politiques de l’identité sexuelle
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
As Foucault reminded us, Western medical and legal discourse long accorded a certain status to “hermaphroditism,” if not intersexuality: a mixture of two sexes in the same individual was more or less tolerated. From the 18th century onwards, it became necessary to establish the “true sex:” telling the truth of sex was to admit, on the one hand, that there was only one true sex and, on the other, that this sex would tell the truth about us. With Foucault, Wittig, Preciado and others, the course will examine this construction of sex as a matter of truth. Taught in French.
