Catalog description

This course considers the borders of Parisian urban space: gentrification, de-gentrification, regentrification of neighborhoods, and uneven management of illegal activity. Diverse commemorations of working-class and marginalized memories and histories of Paris will be discussed, including but not limited to the Commune of 1871, the deportations during World War II, and the events of October 17, 1961. Together, we will reflect upon the legacy of French colonization on Parisian urban space (its riches, its different populations) and on the communities of exiles and migrants that lived for a period of time in Paris or settled there in the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Particular attention will be paid to the literature, photography and studio arts that inform and inspire sociologists and can serve as documentation or in building knowledge. Taught in French. Course limited to students in Brown-in-France study abroad program.
