Interpretation and Application of Epidemiology

Epidemiology is not only the study of patterns of health and disease. It also requires the practice of synthesizing evidence, interpreting findings, and communicating their implications for research, practice, and policy. Strong conceptual foundations allow epidemiologists to ask meaningful questions, state causal and non-causal frameworks, and interpret findings within complex systems. Practical application translates these concepts into real-world analyses, requiring decisions about data sources, study design, measurement, and analytic strategies. Equally essential is the ability to communicate epidemiologic evidence clearly to diverse audiences, including policymakers, practitioners, and the public. Without clear interpretation and communication, even methodologically rigorous findings cannot inform action. This course focuses on the interpretation and application of epidemiology through the synthesis of existing evidence, the communication of epidemiologic methods and findings to diverse audiences, and the implementation of selected advanced analytic approaches.
