Chemical and Transport Processes in the Environment

Catalog description

This course will cover fundamental properties and processes that are important for the fate and transport of chemicals in the environment. Topics will include acid/base speciation, complexation, sorption, phase-partitioning, and solution chemistry. Emphasis will be placed on natural and engineered environmental systems, including a range of environmentally relevant media (e.g. water, air, soil/sediments, plants, organisms). Conceptual understanding of chemical structure and its role in environmental transport will be highlighted, while quantitative approaches will be used to solve problems. This course is relevant for graduate students interested in environmental pollution chemistry. Undergraduates need permission of the instructor to register.
