Energy and the Environment

Catalog description
The course explores wind and solar energies, nuclear energy, and the energy sources where most of the “useful” energy originates at the present time. In-class example problems, real-world situation homework assignments, and weekly mini-projects will lead to the culmination of the course - the final course design project. The basic heat transfer problems related to energy efficiency are presented. Rankine and Brayton power cycles and cycle modifications supporting energy efficiency are investigated. The energy industry's impact on the environment is researched. The combustion process emissions, such as SOx, NOx, and PM, and their capture technologies, are investigated. The carbon footprint calculations are illustrated. Traditional and cutting-edge technologies for carbon capture and storage are presented. The Earth climate model will be evaluated. The course features two 1-page-long scientific summaries and a tour of the Manchester Street Power Station.
