Catalog description
The central theme is to familiarize students with typical microstructures in metals and alloys, their origin, and factors that control stability. The role of processing (primary and secondary) in influencing microstructures will be demonstrated. The ability to change microstructure through composition and processing to obtain a "desired" microstructure that provides specific properties will be highlighted with examples in different alloy systems including AI, steels, and Ni-based. Factors that control stability and shape of second phase particles will be discussed for L/S and S/S processing. The consequences of microstructural changes on physical and mechanical properties will be illustrated. Prerequisite: ENGN 0410 . Recommended: ENGN 1410 .
