Catalog description

Application and derivation of the laws of thermodynamics, built from the atomic scale up. Basic statistical mechanics treatment of chemical thermodynamics, and an in-depth treatment of the calculus of thermodynamics. Driving forces for atomic and macroscopic processes. Phase and chemical equilibria and partitioning of species in multiphase and reactive systems. Applications and examples drawn from chemical processing and environmental problems. Prerequisite: ENGN 0720 or equivalent. Offered in alternate years.
