This class will attempt to discover whether there is such a thing as American modernism, examining the connections between works and movements as different as Gertrude Stein's highly experimental Three Lives , the Harlem Renaissance (Larsen, Hurston), American Gothic (Anderson, Faulkner), social realism (Wharton, Wright), the cosmopolitan fiction of Fitzgerald and Hemingway, and the proto-postmodern work of Barnes and West.
