Bloomsbury and Modernism

Catalog description

This course will explore the contribution of the so-called "Bloomsbury Group" to the development of modernism in Britain. The focus will be on the central literary figures (Virginia Woolf, E. M. Forster, T. S. Eliot), but attention will also be paid to the visual arts (especially Roger Fry and Post-Impressionism) and social criticism (Lytton Strachey, Leonard Woolf, and John Maynard Keynes). A major question will be how the controversies swirling around Bloomsbury exemplify important debates about modernism. Enrollment limited. Not open to first-year students.
