Ekphrasis: Writing for Art's Sake

How can we appreciate art in a way that inspires us as writers and grows our writing? The answer depends on, what Tony Ullyatt calls, ekphrastic processes, which includes an awareness of form, color, texture, and feeling. To support our growth, we will reflect on paintings in several art collections, actively consider the work of their curators, and engage in creative projects that will enable us to make imaginative connections between the two mediums. We will be guided by several ekphrastic writers, including John Berger, Kenneth Clarke, Joan Abse, and James Baldwin, and be supported with regular peer workshopping and conferences with your professor. A prior knowledge of art is not required. Between art and writing, then, the tools are allied, says John Updike, the impulse is one. Pre-reqs: ENGL 0930 (or any intermediate Nonfiction writing course).
