This course examines popular culture as a critical site of meaning-making, resistance, and social transformation across racial, ethnic, national, and cultural contexts. We will analyze how Black, Indigenous, Latinx, Asian American, diasporic, queer, transnational, and other marginalized communities use popular culture to contest power, assert identity, and imagine collective futures. Drawing upon Brown’s robust library and archival resources, we will engage primary and secondary sources drawn from music, film, digital media, performance, and visual culture alongside scholarly criticism. What will result is an original, sustained research project that reflects your ability to conduct humanities-based inquiry, synthesize scholarly conversations, and communicate findings through clear, rhetorically effective academic writing. In an era marked by misinformation, disinformation, and contested truths, this course emphasizes research literacy, methodological rigor, and ethical citation practices as essential components of undergraduate humanities writing and research.
