Social Psychology of Race, Class, and Gender

Catalog description

This seminar is designed to give participants an understanding of how members of multiple social groups experience race, class, and gender and how these identities serve as axes of stratification. Through this course, I am hopeful and confident that you will learn to apply the “sociological imagination” to educational issues relating to race, class, and gender. This means understanding race, class, and gender as social constructs, learning how they exist within social structures and institutions, and how their structures and functions influence an individual’s perceptions of self and others. Also, we will learn how scholars examine the interconnections between race, class, and gender, the different methodological approaches these scholars take, and issues in studying these social categories simultaneously. In exploring these concepts, we will learn to be critical consumers of research, especially in the public sphere.
