Fieldwork and Seminar in Secondary Education

Catalog description

What makes high school in the US worthwhile, engaging, and equitable for all students? What characterizes a great high school teacher? How are current events affecting teachers and students? In this community-engaged seminar, you will explore these questions as you observe weekly in a local secondary classroom. You will connect observations to a broader investigation of schools as complex educational, political, and social institutions. You will analyze readings on disparities and opportunities in education and you will develop distinct writing skills in 1) fieldwork documentation, through observations and analysis of classroom interactions 2) reflective narration, through development of a portrait of good teaching, and 3) scholarly analysis, through completion of an inquiry paper on a topic of your choice. Take advantage of this timely class to contextualize current national policies within local high school classrooms.
