Teaching Writing to Teens: Theory and Pedagogy
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
This course seeks to explore how writing is being taught in US schools, particularly under resourced schools serving students of color who are in Advanced Placement or Dual Enrollment writing classes. The course also seeks to imagine how writing could be taught from a student centered perspective and a decolonizing perspective. Students will read about the theory and practice of teaching writing and then complete a practicum where they act as writing teachers and tutors to twelfth grade students at Hope High School and Blackstone Academy who are pursuing dual enrollment college credit for their high school writing class. This integration of theory, practice and reflection allows for students to balance academic and authentic learning.
