Habla Conmigo: Cross-Cultural Language Learning and Teaching

Catalog description

This course highlights the intersection of language learning and language teaching in a cross-cultural context. Through active engagement as a Spanish language learner and an English language teacher, students consider how arts-based, multimodal strategies can influence their experiences. The course builds on The Arts Literacy Project, established at Brown and utilized at The Habla Institute in Mérida, Mexico. Students learn about the components of The Arts Literacy’s Performance Cycle framework and integrate this learning with Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) strategies. Students begin the wintersession in virtual sessions investigating literacy, culturally-responsive pedagogies, and second language acquisition. They apply these theories to practice while immersed in language study for two weeks in Mérida and creating resources for local RI teachers. All proficiencies are welcome: no prior Spanish is required, and heritage Spanish speakers are encouraged to enroll.
