Child and Adolescent Mental Health

This seminar course is designed to provide an in-depth exploration of child and adolescent mental health, through a clinical psychology lens. We will discuss the defining characteristics of childhood disorders (e.g., neurological, behavioral, mood, intellectual and learning disorders), consider theories of etiology (i.e. causes), examine methods of assessment, and introduce theory and methods of therapeutic treatment. We will discuss unique considerations for child populations, exploring developmental factors that influence the expression and management of mental disorders across stages of childhood. This course will draw on case studies (historical and contemporary), clinical research, and media (news and entertainment) to illustrate concepts and guide class discussions. We will also discuss issues related to mental health stigma, ethics, culture, diversity, and biases in the mental health field.
