Why, and how, does James Joyce use The Odyssey as a framework for his masterpiece Ulysses? This seminar reads Homer in tandem with Joyce, while also attending to Joyce’s allusions to and displacements of another major intertext, Hamlet. Themes to be pursued include: wandering, hospitality, inheritance, modernity.
