Catalog description

Through close readings of canonical European texts and rewritings of them in the twentieth-century Caribbean, we explore the literary possibilities and political implications of writing the old in a new language. Readings include Columbus's diaries alongside Carpentier's The Harp and the Shadow (Cuba); Shakespeare's Tempest with that of Aimé Cesaire (Martinique); and Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights alongside novels by Jean Rhys (Dominica) and Maryse Condé (Guadeloupe).
