Horror in the Ancient and Modern World

When are little kids creepy? Why are we afraid of clowns? How does culture shape what we find scary? In this course we will analyze literature from ancient Greece and Rome and compare it to modern horror films and short stories in an attempt to answer these questions. Topics will include monsters, witches, and possession. We will cover themes like gender, death, family, and nature. Class will be primarily discussion-based, with regular writing feedback sessions. No Classics background necessary. WRIT designated. Note that we will be reading, watching, and discussing scenes, images, and concepts that may be disturbing. Content warnings provided.
