Dead and Loving It: The Cult of the Saints in the Eastern Mediterranean

This course introduces students to the literature, history, and religious life of the late ancient and medieval Mediterranean through the lens of a highly significant socio-cultural phenomenon: the Christian cult of the saints. Students will have the opportunity to engage with a variety of primary source texts in translation, while examining the subject from the perspectives of anthropology, religious studies, material culture, history and literary studies, to approach this rich topic through an interdisciplinary framework. Enrollment limited to 19 first year students.
