Catalog description
This survey course provides an overview of the field of biomedical informatics covering relevant topics in computer science, healthcare, biology, and social science. This is not a programming course and there are no computer coding components in this course. Emphasis is given to understanding the organization of biomedical information, the effective management of information using computer technology, and the impact of such technology on biomedical research, education, and patient care. The final capstone project of this course requires the in-depth examination, critique, and presentation of a specific topic in biomedical informatics, within the context of student (clinical or computational) interests. Students taking the course for graduate credit must produce a manuscript suitable for peer-review that synthesizes existing research and presents insights or applications in biomedical informatics. Suggested: concurrently taking or completed introductory statistics course (e.g., BIOL 0495 or BIOL2025).
