ARTS 1019
Art CAMP: Critical Art Methods + Practice
Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Art CAMP launches first-year students into the robust arts ecosystem at Brown University, inviting them to experience the arts as an essential part of campus life and intellectual inquiry. Each week, students will attend an arts program of their choosing then develop creative responses in any medium, encouraging students to build a sustainable arts practice on campus. Class discussions will be grounded in critical readings, providing a framework for arts research and practice. By the end of the course, students will have mapped pathways for engaging with the arts across campus, developed strategies for sustaining a creative practice, and learned how to access arts resources to support their academic research. The course positions the arts not as separate from academic life, but as a vital, generative force that can deepen inquiry and support meaningful engagement across fields of study.
