Applied Anthropology

Catalog description

Applied Anthropology offers graduate students the opportunity to explore how contemporary anthropologists around the globe use theories, insights and methods to address real-world problems and develop solutions to complex issues and challenges. This course will be valuable both to students considering professional applied work as anthropologists, and to those planning an academic career who will be training students in preparation for a variety of fields. The course offers grounding in the strengths, contradictions, and ethics of anthropological praxis; historical overview of the development and variety of applied, practicing, and engaged anthropology; case studies of anthropologists working independently and in-house in a variety of fields such as business, technology, design, public health, policy, and civil society; and practical tips for methodological approaches (like rapid assessment and design research) and preparing job application materials.
