An introduction to music and language in cultural context. Drawing on case studies from around the world, we consider how music and language are intimately connected. Topics covered include cannibals' singing in colonial Brazil, music and electoral politics in Texas, working class culture and country music, singing and society in the Amazon, whistle speech and songwriting in indigenous Mexico, Apache identity and popular music, modernity and classical Indian music, music and mass advertising in the United States, and the politics of Zulu music production in South Africa. Reserved for First Year students. Enrollment limited to 19.
