From Harlem to Haiti to Harare: Black Politics and Culture Across Borders

This discussion-based course explores how Black people have shaped political, cultural, and social movements and practices across national borders during the twentieth century. Focusing on liberation struggles, political activism, pop culture, and Black feminisms, we will analyze Black transnational cultural and political exchanges across the U.S., Latin America, Europe, and Africa. Readings include oral histories, plays, travel writing, and political programs, alongside interdisciplinary scholarship. Instead of a traditional final paper, you will create a publicly accessible article on an underrepresented topic, gaining research, writing, and public scholarship experience. Ideal for students interested in history, politics, culture, or activism. Writing-Designated (WRIT) course, no prerequisites.
