Catalog description

This course engages with how race is portrayed in opera, through the music, libretto, programming, and casting. It is designed to give students an overview of theories of race and power as it relates to music, specifically opera, and how certain ideologies are perpetuated through cultural products. Students will be encouraged to think critically, and apply the concepts learned to a variety of types of music through class activities and projects.
