Brown University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
From 1870 to 1943, Chinese were defined by their "race" as ineligible for citizenship and immigration. Similar prohibitions against Japanese, Filipinos, and Indians followed in the early 20th century. This seminar will examine Asian American struggles against exclusion and how they shaped American definitions of citizenship, race, and constitutional rights. Enrollment limited to 20 juniors and seniors.
