Music, Race, and Identity

Catalog description

This course is an exploration of race and culture and their influence on each other as examined through the specific cultural product of music. It is designed to introduce students to understanding the social construction of race, the social construction of music, genres, and the relationship between them. A key aspect of the course will be to further the understanding of how music, which is an important aspect of most people’s lives, shapes society, identity, and social interactions. Students will be encouraged to think critically, and apply the concepts learned to a variety of music through class activities and projects.
