Surveys the history of American medicine in its social and political contexts, including changing understandings of disease, treatment practices, and medical institutions. Focuses on how gender and race have informed how patients and healers have made sense out of pain and disease. This course is part of the American Studies “Questions” series, fulfilling an introductory-level requirement for the AMST concentration. No prerequisites.
