This is Narragansett Land: An Indigenous History of Rhode Island

Though situated in the nation’s smallest state, the Narragansett were one of the largest and most powerful tribes in this region. Today, only about 2,800 Narragansett citizens remain. Together, we will explore the history of Rhode Island from a Narragansett perspective. We will interrogate prevailing narratives of settler-colonization with Indigenous oral history and primary source documentation. Taking a 500 year journey from pre-contact to the modern day, we will identify where repeating cycles emerge. Most importantly, we will discuss how our engagement with this work could create positive change. Limited to first-years and sophomores; no prerequisites; WRIT course.
