Black Internationalism

What is Black Internationalism? Who are Black internationalists? What are their motivations, demands, and strategies? This course explores African descended people’s global collective struggle against white supremacy, more specifically, the political, intellectual, and artistic dimensions of the struggle, with a focus on U.S.-based actors. Crucial topics that the class will study include the international aspects of the Black freedom struggle in the United States, anti-colonial movements, struggles for social justice, Black feminism, and foreign policy. Class discussion will be framed around questions of gender, class, nation, and empire as well as the production of historical narratives. Students will engage with scholarly texts, most of them historical, as well as a wide range of primary sources produced by Black internationalists, including essays, speeches, and plays.
