Martinique and the Black Radical Imagination

What is the Black Radical Imagination? What are some of its most ardent sources of inspiration? What kinds of political horizons does it animate? How is it practiced? And how is it abused or misappropriated? This course analyzes the influence of the Caribbean island Martinique on contemporary discourses concerning the “Black Radical Imagination.” We will survey literature from Martinican artists and theorists such as Suzanne Césaire, Aimé Césaire, Frantz Fanon, Simone Yoyotte, Lucie Thésée & Édouard Glissant. This course will also serve as an introduction to various idioms, methodologies, and paradigms in the field of American Studies.
