Food and Gender in U.S. Popular Culture

Catalog description

Why is salad coded as feminine and steak as masculine? This course examine how gender is constructed and performed in sites across the U.S. food system, taking in farm fields, supermarkets, home kitchens, and restaurants. We explore food production, cooking, feeding, eating, and dieting, through a variety of food texts, including cookbooks, advertisements, and the Food Network. We will engage all of our senses (especially taste!), as we explore how gender intersects with other significant cultural categories and shapes everyday food experiences in the United States.
