This course examines the relationship between science and popular culture in modern America. We will examine the representation of science and technology in films, museums, education, and advertising, as well as the role of political culture in scientific practice and controversies. Topics will range from the history of debates about vaccines to concerns about nuclear power. We will also consider the role of science and medicine in reinforcing as well as challenging social and racial inequalities over the past century.
