Catalog description
This course is a continuation of CHM 115. Topics include: an introduction to the chemistry of carbon; the hydrocarbons; organic functional groups (their structural and functional characteristics); the relationship of these functional groups to the chemistry of carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids; protein synthesis; and metabolism. The metabolic pathways of fermentation, glycolysis, the citric acid cycle and the utilization of carbohydrates, lipids, and proteins by these metabolic pathways are discussed. Prerequisite: CHM 115 or its equivalent as determined by the department. Three lecture hours and three laboratory hours per week. Instructional Support Fee applies.Gen. Ed.
