Literacy Foundations

Catalog description

This course prepares future secondary education teachers to support literacy development for middle and high school-age students. Students in this course develop an understanding of linguistic and neurological literacy development, and the distinguishing characteristics of dyslexia and struggling readers and writers. Federal and state laws pertaining to learning disabilities specific to literacy acquisition and instruction are examined. Students learn evidence-based instructional practices to support literacy development within their content areas. This course prepares Secondary Education majors to take the Idaho Comprehensive Literacy Assessment Standard 5.
