This course blends a seminar-style format of readings and discussions with active music-making experiences connected to the tradition of steel band music ensembles. In the seminar portion of the course, students will read, discuss, and listen to materials related to the cultural and political circumstances that created the space for steel pan culture to develop in Trinidad and Tobago during the 20th century. Students will also participate in learning the steel pan art-form through traditional rote learning methods, as well as standard notation arrangements.
