Catalog description

This course, offered through Health Sciences Postgraduate Education, is open to all UB students at all levels of study (undergraduate & graduate). The course prepares students for certification as an emergency medical technician (EMT), utilizing basic knowledge and skills necessary to stabilize and safely transport patients ranging from non-emergency and routine medical transport to life threatening emergencies. Students will learn the knowledge and skills necessary to provide out of hospital emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergent patients who access the emergency medical services (EMS) system. Various ways EMTs function as part of a comprehensive EMS response system, under medical oversight, will be covered. Students will learn to perform interventions with the basic equipment typically found in an ambulance. The critical link between the scene of an emergency and the health care system will be emphasized. Each student is required to complete 8 hours of clinical observation time at St. Vincent’s Medical Center in Bridgeport, CT. The cost of the course is $1050 and students can register through the EMT link located on this page: https://www.bridgeport.edu/academics/programs/hs-postgrad-programs/. UB students, please note: the $1,050 fee is the responsibility of the student and is not eligible for Financial Aid funding. Participants will earn six (6) credit hours of experiential learning credits, credited toward the HSCI 211 and HSCI 212 courses
