Catalog description
With its own manner of communicating information and building narrative, the era of silent cinema (1895-1930) was both foundational to and distinct from the sound films that followed it. This class will explore silent cinema’s crucial developments as an industry and art form. Topics will include the star system, directors, fans and audiences, representations of race and gender, and the historical and cultural contexts that governed early film’s emergence as mass entertainment.
