Catalog description

The purpose of English 322 Understanding Grammar is to help students understand language as a systematic enterprise. We will approach our study from literary and philosophical perspectives, investigating how and why English grammar exists and debate what these discoveries mean for communication in today’s globalized world. By analyzing parts of speech, sentences patterns, and punctuation, we will examine the intricacies that form the foundation of communication. Through close readings of a variety of passages from literature, history, philosophy, and contemporary culture, we will move beyond a basic understanding of rules and gain appreciation of language’s structure and beauty. This course is intended for anyone who is interested in understanding English, but particularly for those intending to teach English at the secondary level.
