This new course will be offered in a combination of lecture and student discussion/presentations. It will introduce students to the concept of zoonotic diseases and how and why they occur. It will take a cross-over approach, merging the typical veterinary perspective with the public health perspective. We will go into detail on several categories of zoonotic diseases, with examples involving familiar domesticated and urban animal species. We will discuss both the human and animal presentations, epidemiology, means of prevention and control, available diagnostics, available treatments, and associated human and animal regulations for each disease where possible. Examples of zoonotic diseases involving more exotic wildlife, their rising prevalence with globalization, and their medical, conservation, economic and geopolitical impacts will also be covered.
