Informatics and Policy in Healthcare

Catalog description

This course provides students with a foundational understanding of health policy and informatics in healthcare. The student will explore information technologies and informatics processes to efficiently gather data, support decision making, engage the client, and increase the delivery of safe and high-quality care. Data security, digital health, data exchange, and informatics-related standards will be introduced. Additionally, the student will investigate the American health care system and the government’s role in the regulation of healthcare. The impact of the politically engaged nurse advocating for policies that reduce health disparities, increase access to quality health care, and promote the health of individuals, families, and communities will be emphasized. Concepts of ethics, healthcare reform, determinants of health, social justice, and health equity will be examined. Prerequisite(s): First and Second Semester in Nursing Major. Corequisite(s): Third Semester in Nursing Major.
